Middlesex County Wildlife Education: Can raccoons climb brick walls or vinyl siding?

The more we encroach upon their habitat the more wild animals we come into contact with. Urban sprawl has taken over to the extent that urban areas have become the natural habitat for animals like raccoons. This means they have needed to adapt to their environment in order to survive. One of the ways in which they have ensured the survival of their species is by building dens in close proximity to humans. They are reliant on humans for food and shelter. They can frequently be found going through the garbage cans in residential neighborhoods and utilize any small entry point to gain access to homes. They are extremely adept at climbing and use this to their advantage.

Climbing up the side of your home
Raccoons constantly search for a convenient way into your home. However, if they are unable to find a place to enter at ground level, they will continue searching higher up. They are able to climb up any surface on which they can find purchase. This means that any surface except glass and un-weathered sheet metal is used to gain entry to your property. Brick and vinyl siding is no deterrent. In fact, it might actually make it easier for them to climb up the side of your home. They are also remarkably skilled in the scaling of drainpipes. Trees that are planted in close proximity to your home are frequently used to climb onto the roof.

How are they adapted for climbing?
Raccoons have almost human-like hands. These five-fingered paws allow them to grip any surface and make their way up. Their bodies are also adapted to withstand a fall from a relative height.

Damage caused by climbing
Apart from the damage that they can cause to the outside of your home, they cause even more damage once they have reached their destination. Once they have found an opening big enough to enter through they will proceed to build a den inside your home. If they cannot find an opening, they may just make one.
· They will climb down your chimney in order to find shelter. As they are very good climbers getting in and out is a breeze for adult raccoons. It provides a protected place for them to give birth to their babies.
· They can climb through openings left by the plumbing mats on your roof. The mats are used to cover the holes made when plumbing vents are installed. Raccoons tear the mats in order to make a hole they can use.
· Areas where your roof meets are covered by soffits. These are weak points that raccoons exploit in order to get into your attic.
· Roof vents represent a straightforward way for raccoons to gain entry. They are not exceptionally strong and are easily broken. · The edge of your roof is often weathered by the elements. This leaves it vulnerable to critters. It is not difficult for them to create an opening that they can use.
